Finland's most significant centre for air transportation is located around 15 km / 9 miles north of Helsinki city centre. Helsinki Vantaalla Airport (HEL) is becoming increasingly important as a transport hub as Finland gains popularity as a holiday destination, and has evolved into a transit stop for passengers on their way to Asia. Recently this airport has seen passenger traffic in approaching 15 million, a major increase on previous statistics and the highest traffic figure in the history of the airport.
Helsinki Vantaalla Airport is well organised, with two separate terminals serving domestic (Terminal 1) and international (Terminal 2) flights. In total, Finland's biggest airport provides roughly 11,000 jobs and on numerous occasions has been voted both the best facility of its kind in Europe and throughout the world, being famed for its punctuality. It is also close to Kerava, Sipoo, Tikkurila, Tuusula and the ever-expanding city of Vantaa.
Cars can be hired from rental agencies at Vantaa Airport, with Helsinki being just a 30-minute drive away and reached along Highway 45. Public transportation options to Helsinki city centre and other destinations include taxi, Finnair City buses and shuttle bus services. Worth noting, some hotels offer guests courtesy transfers to and from the airport.
The Scandic Hotel Gateway is conveniently located on the airport grounds and a number of other hotels are situated in close proximity to the airport. Alternatively, many visitors choose to stay in the nearby Helsinki city centre, where hotels include the Holiday Inn and Ramana.
